Strate by Alexander Kuguk Acquired by Private Collector

Strate

In the lower half there are these fine combed lines where someone dragged a toothed edge through the wet grey, and you can see the darker paint underneath — the painting letting you look one layer down.

$3,000 — Acquired by Private Collector

Acrylic on board, approximately 50 × 40 cm. Horizontal-strata composition in burnt umber, oxide green, warm grey, and titanium white. Non-representational. Applied with broad flat tools in compacted horizontal passes. Surface exhibits fine cracking across the central grey band and combed parallel grooves in the lower-centre section where a toothed implement has been drawn through wet paint to expose the underlying layer.

settled  ·  stratified  ·  quiet  ·  final

Horizontal bands of raw umber, oxide green, and warm grey cross the surface in slow, uneven layers. The paint is thick but flat — pressed down, not built up. Cracks run through the central grey passage in a fine web, the kind that comes from material drying under its own weight. The top and bottom edges are framed by near-black — burnt umber pushed to its darkest value — and between those borders the painting reads as sediment. Combed lines are visible in the lower-centre section where a toothed tool was dragged through wet paint, leaving parallel grooves that expose the layer beneath. There is no gesture here that moves quickly. Everything has been laid down and then waited on. The green bands at top and bottom sit between the black borders and the grey core with a quiet, factual presence. They do not accent. They do not contrast. They simply exist in their place. The painting knows exactly what it is.
